I really know hat you mean about passing the buck! My son (18) has had multiple counselors, a psychiatrist and even a therapeutic school tell him he needs a more intensive counselor/psychiatrist/program.
As if saying this will bring those services magically into existence!
Yes exactly, the Medicaid administration for our county has something called a tailored plan which was supposed to start in September but has been halted until April (lol) they sent a letter stating the goals - all of which are beyond the pale for my son so if they do what they say they will be miracle workers, but I fear they will pass the buck , shrug their shoulders and call it done when I tell them his drug list and his symptoms and the restrictions just to keep him stable , it is laughable. I complained to the state and the person I talked to was stunned when I spoke of my son gaining a third voice she was just stunned and I truely believe they do not know the depth of mental illness so they just write these pie in the sky goals without any thought
Sorry
Sorry but I do not believe this is God’s issue. He’s here for guidance hopefully but that’s it. This is our fight with the state agencies who do not care. Not just with mental illness but other issues as well.
These are human rights issues. Started with closing the state hospitals… living under a bridge is ok though. Seriously
While we are comfortable we’re not wealthy. We do have a portfolio. Have not had it long but got some inheritance about 10 yrs ago and put it in with a broker. I do not trust Wall St
I have 3 friends who learned how to invest. End game is when we’re gone someone else has to do this. Terrifies me. Makes me angry… my grandfather lost everything in the crash of 1929.
High school education who was a buildee and built many churches in NYC, large homes etc…
Lost it all. It’s all gambling
Thank you @nowwhat. I own the book but have not read it. This thread is motivating me to get on with it – get on with the planning!
Hi SueML,
First, I want to thank you for all of the information you have provided. I deeply empathize with all of the concerns and issues being raised in this topic. I have a 28 year old son who is currently experiencing psychosis for the second time in two years. He is currently unmedicated and like the loved ones of so many others on this for forum, my son does not want to take meds again.
Since the spring of 2020 when my son had his first psychotic episode, he has been unable to hold down a job. He lives with me and his stepdad. So, the question I have is how to do I convince my son who is in denial about his mental health issues that we need to get him on disability so that he can bring in some income? Even when he was lucid last winter because he had finally stayed on meds long enough to be present, he was still in denial about his mental health issues. Why would he suddenly be willing to apply for disability for mental health reasons if he can’t accept he has this disability? It’s kind of a catch-22, if you know what I mean.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated.
I am in the same boat. I want to get my son out of my house so I can work on getting him better about taking care of himself when I am dead. I can’t afford any of the housing in my area. He can’t save a penny. I only see a future of homelessness for him. Where are the group homes for people with this illness? If it weren’t for us parents taking care of them, what would happen? But they will most likely outlive us. I want to make a plan for his future.
