News: Mother, daughter rely on mental health nonprofit to battle schizophrenia

Nearly 23 years ago, Rebecca Phillips was in and out of hospitals, on and off different medications and experiencing severe symptoms of schizophrenia.

Now, Phillips, 41, is leading an independent lifestyle, writing a blog for The Topeka Capital-Journal and sharing her story of recovery through the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

This transition wasn’t easy, she said, and it definitely didn’t happen overnight.

“I had always been happy as a child and then when I hit my teen years, I started getting more introspective and pulling away from friends and I think one of the things I went through was not knowing how to tell my parents,” Phillips said. “All of this stuff was going for me when I was a teenager and then when I started struggling, I just was real mad at myself because I didn’t know why.”
