Sorry you have to deal with a dual dx…because that is what is going on. Yes he has a mental illness, but he is also abusing alcohol. It may not make him drunk faster in as much as it makes him more mentally unstable. Alcohol consumption negates any positives you might be getting with meds.
While we are compassionate and supportive of issues our son has with his MI, we have made it clear his choice, because even mentally ill people can make choices (in a non psychotic state), to self medicate will not be dealt with the same level of compassion and support. Yes alcoholism is a disease of addiction, you can choose sobriety whereas you can not chose to be non sz…if that makes sense.
Check your local community resources for dual dx treatment centers and the possibility for court ordered treatment. And if you can find a local support group for you-go!
This illness is hard enough on families, but the addiction part of it is the real nightmare IMHO. Best wishes.
