Use of opioids such as OxyContin and codeine is a leading cause of death in young adults, say researchers in Ontario who reviewed coroner reports from a period of nearly 20 years.
Rates of opioid-related deaths are increasing rapidly in the province and are concentrated among the young — a substantial burden of disease, the researchers say in Monday’s issue of the journal Addiction.
Yeah, there’s an opiate crisis in my neck of the woods as well…all of northern New England is apparently awash in opiates whether prescription or street product.
I remember when Oxycontin was becoming popular and people I knew were snorting the stuff, I for whatever reason had no interest in it. Now I think they are upwards of $80 a pill here where as heroin is $10 to $20 for a dose or two so most of the people who got hooked on Oxy’s are doing this now.
Perhaps it’s just that I’ve been lucky that every time the stuff seems to be around I just never seem to be hanging out but this junk does honestly seem to sit upon some out of reach and mysterious pedestal in my mind as it’s one of the only substances I’ve never tried…I know, I know it’s very bad but even so…
I have had little experience however I did try it once and thankfully had an allergic reaction. Itched from head to toe for hours. One of my brother’s had a mishap with it and ended up in hospital with a very enlarged arm. I recently found out it’s in perks? Opened my eyes to my children’s addiction/problems with it.
