This NYT article is intriguing since it describes ongoing research into the metabolic connection between the gut microbiome and autism, similar to what we are learning about the gut microbiome and psychosis. I have a strong feeling that more research will eventually yield promising non-drug therapies for a host of cognitive disorders now thought to arise in the brain alone. Its becoming more and more apparent that our “second brain” in the gut (along with the microbes present) plays a role in metabolism and behavior:
