Do any of your loved ones read hidden meanings or find hidden meaning directed at them?
I remember once my son saw a beautiful sunset and he said “Wow, I need to try to figure out what they are telling me with that!” He was only in fifth grade, and I remember how much it shook me up.
My daughter who just turned 18 last month is on the lowest dosage of haldol right now and she is responding well to it so far.
Maybe this is why he thinks his liver is being poisoned.
The doctor told me there is a name for this. I can’t recall what it is. When my son was in psychosis he saw things like this a lot. The one that sticks out to me was we were watching tv and there was an athlete on who had the same # on his shirt my son had all of his HS years. There were several other things he saw during this same 15 minutes of watching TV.
That’s interesting Diane . My son has been like this from the beginning and is still seeing hidden messages / hearing them.
@Jane57 - I think it may be called ideas of reference - but I think the doctor used a different word. Is this what your son may be experiencing?
This is referring to someone with bi-polar -
“Some more subtle symptoms may also occur, such as the belief held by some patients that everything occurring around them is related somehow to them when in fact, it isn’t. This symptom is known as ideas of reference.”
Another example they gave is seeing things on billboards - thinking they had meaning for the person or perhaps thinking the person on the billboard was trying to contact them. (a celebrity) My son didn’t have this - it was more everything was about him.
My first son is 20 and has been on meds for SZA for a year. My second son is 19 and has been taking meds for two years, he is taking haldol and seroquel (since September). Haldol worked for him.
Both of my sons do when in psychosis. Very much so. My eldest has everything going on I think.
when my son is not well he thinks here is chip in his ear and someone who is a brown color had planted it in his ear. He also said that few times that he is GOD and told me how can you mess up with God and force him to take poison ( referring to medicine like poison).
He also has delusions that certain places and people causes a pressure in his lower back head like severe headache that does not go away with Ibuprofen or Advil, etc…
Year 2017 after he stopped his Invega shot cold turkey he had the headache and we tried all types of headache medicine and steroid and nothing worked. after he travelled to California and stayed there for a while, headache went away but he was hospitalized in CA and given Haldol and get somehow better…
but Invega seems to help him more…he is calmer with clear speech… will see how it goes in few more months…
Caringmom,
your hand is full. you are caring for 2 boys. I think they can help and learn from each other. it is good they are complaint on medicine. it is a blessing…
Yes Diane thanks that’s exactly that, for instance last week at the meeting with the dr, the dr was wearing a certain co,our bright socks,
That colour is entwined in my son with a long standing delusion and he thought he was wearing them to get a message to him.
Also tv, billboards, even things I , my husband ,my mum say at times he will ask “is that a warning”
How long was he on the invega shot and what mg before he quit in 2017? My son intends to stop in Oct cold turkey. Was your son clear on the shot before he quit?
Yeah - my son would never talk around a cell phone - because they were listening, he would write things down with very small handwriting.
he was on it in 2017 for just 2 months and we went to outpatient doctor and he tried to convince him to be on 117mg + Depokate and he refused.
Yes he had clear speech and seems like he was rational but after couple weeks he started going down hill and getting depressed. I spoke to his pdoc without his knowledge and he adviced me to get guardianship and it was a very hard process… he wept hard when he was served to appear in court and want to hit me and accused me of trying to control his life and after 3 weeks he left my Home to CA.
My son in his first episode, he would not used his cell phone and hid his cell phone somewhere behind bushes and also his laptop because he thought some people are after him.

Yes, My son would write things down also. when we go to a public place like Barnes and Noble, he wanted to say some words then he would hold it back then go to restroom to utter the words. then we so home, he would write on a piece of paper what he wanted to say because he is afraid someone would hear him and retaliate against him and me.
he has done that few times after each hospitalization and usually he stops meds like one week after being discharge…
Can the doctor have them court ordered? The made my son stay on it for 5 months. He is still on it for probation.
Since your son is not in Psychiatric ward, then the lawyer has to generate an court order and he would need a statement from his doctor. that mean lawyer file for involuntarily commitment and he must convince the judge that he is in danger to himself or others. once the judge signs the order, then the MI person is taking into a hospital in 72 hours hold …waiting for a court date so he will have the chance to defend himself.
during the court, if the sees enough evidence to keep him for a week the judge would order 7 days treatment and with a schedule to show in court again after 7 days. if after 7 days, the MI person still not clear yet, they would extend it for another 40 days.
I did that in November 2015 and paid about $1000 for emergency involuntarily order through a family lawyer because my son was so sick and making lots of bad decisions and wanted to fly to Europe/Ireland without knowing anyone there!
this also can be done free of charge through a police officer ( specialized for Involuntarily commitment) but you as a parent have to show enough evidence that he can be a danger to himself or others. this may take longer. in my case, I was afraid that he would escape…
All of what I told you is applicable in my state ( Midwest/Arkansas)
In California, the law is different and it can be hard to keep someone in Hospital for more 10 to 20 days. unless he gets conserved by the county. I can tell more about this if you want to know about California laws regarding Mental illness.
Try to convince your son to stay on medicine as much as you can. Bribe him with something he likes to do. figure out some activity he likes to do on regular basis like bowling, dinner one or twice a week, movie night, etc…
the withdrawal symptoms of Invega are hard. My son became Suicidal after about 2 months of quitting the shot cold turkey in 2017. Usually the shot would start fading away completely after 2 months to 2 months and 1/2.
after 4 months of quitting cold turkey, months was hospitalized several times in California and did a public offense and has a warrant for his arrest because he did not show up in court. he was in jail for a week I think prior to a series of hospitalizations…
The public Conservator-ship helped him because all his offenses are now forgiving.
of course, there is always a trade-off. he is now locked in a facility he does not like being there when his shot starts to wear off.
My son was also on probation for 2 years but he never followed the schedule to see his probation officer. he is suppose to take his medicine and get a jobs or go to school to show the probation officer some progress but he became sick and homeless. he was given another warning and another warrant for his arrest because he did not show up in court in CA.
I am glad he is conserved now. I know that he is safe and eating OK and he has a roof over his head. when he was on streets, I had high level of anxiety not knowing enough about his whereabouts. My brother was not able to follow him everywhere and keep track of him!!
I meant can’t your son get court ordered meds. So when he leaves the hospital he has to take them. That is what forced my son to take the shot. If he didn’t go get it they would come and get him.
Thanks for all the info. What is your sons diagnosis?
