Government Program for caretakers of the severely mentally ill

Not so sure about the guardian question, but I logically don’t see a reason why not (but, we all know these services are missing a logical button, lol). I’m not too sure what questions they’re going to ask my son - depending on the day, it could be a real interesting conversation. I will prep him the best that I can. I prepped him for a county ‘test’ not long ago and he aced it with flying colors - I was amazed! I would never turn my back on $600 monthly like TheSunshineMaras receives for 13 hours.

Yep, still here at work type, type, typing away, lol!

Have them call the number in their county, the operator looked up his info quickly and generated an application over the phone - easy breezy if he’s in the system. It states in LA county, IHSS is considered an alternative to out-of-home care, such as nursing homes or board and care facilities. It is for our loved ones and in LA you can appoint a loved one or they’ll bring in an employee. Call IHSS!

My posting was the second one in this thread - my brother and his wife already receive this wonderful benefit and they have guardianship of their son.

I was directing this to @Vallpen concern regarding guardianship.

Thanks so much for having such great details!!

In Ca, they have many IHSS places available. Applying is easy, but there are caveats. The mentally ill person must not own a home, and must have under 2,000$ in the bank in addition to the recommendation by psychiatrist, and interview by the social worker. In California, the rate is now $15.00 an hour. This program does indeed allow many parents to leave their job to care for the mentally ill relative. The caretaker must live in the same home as the mentally ill individual.

This is what I suspected, and would instantly disqualify me. My son has his own apt.

Ah, me too… it seems like a strange requirement since other paid caregivers don’t!

Actually that’s not true
The ihss recipient doesn’t have to live in the same home
I’m not sure where you pulled that one out
And the ihss pay isn’t 15.00
It changes in each county
“Type ihss pay and your county”
It should pop up online
And you have to be registered with ihss as a caregiver for them
So I would get ahead and start making the process to become an ihss provider since it is a leg the process
You have about 6 months
Since they backpay since the day the client becomes an ihss recipient…
Once you become an ihss provider
You are pretty much an independent worker and can work for other ihss recipients!
I would seriously Mention something about them not being safe left alone
Like seriously…
Screw the social workers that come and check out the client
Be strong and firm when they try to analyze everything…
Be like listen here”my client is not fucking safe being alone!””he needs full fucking care””!!!
Make it a point
Or they will jip you from the care your loved one needs
I’ve been dealing with these guys for more than 6 years
They are assholes
They can screw themselves
They’ll do whatever it takes to give you minimum hours
When you know damn straight you need more hours
Exaggerate if you can!
Trust me
You’ll thank me.

Doesn’t work that way mbheart
You qualify
Don’t worry

To make it highly clear
I worked with other ihss recipients that I didn’t live with
And the two county’s were
Los Angeles and Santa Cruz Im California

Thanks @TheSunshineMaras, I plan on checking this out thoroughly. I provide my son with ALL of the support, including monetary, time, doctors’ appointments, cooking for him, etc. I hope they don’t come back and say “your son refused the ACT Team”

Also here is the benefit of a recipient that lives with you.
You are considered a live in.
And guess what?
You are Tax exempted!
Yay!

Just make sure you fill out a live in provider self certification form

They are going to ask if he can bath himself
Tell them you do laundry
And everything else and that he can not be left alone
Tell them it’s highly dangerous
Call then today since it is a lengthy process
And you should go ahead become a registered ihss provider as well which is extremely easy…

It only takes going to the appointments…
It takes about a month because of the time they spread out the appointments…
It may be sooner depending on where you live

Oh, interesting - so good to know! My son fits perfectly into that description and the psych is filing out their portion as we speak. I’ll find out all of the details soon enough at the interview. Do you have any advice for me regarding interviewing? I would love to cut back on hours to assist him better, but actually work is actually such therapy for me! 15, not too bad! Thanks, Jen
