Government Program for caretakers of the severely mentally ill

”my client is not fucking safe being alone!””he needs full fucking care””!!!

Speaking the absolute truth! Anytime my phone vibrates, I jump because most likely there is some type of drama trouble going on that I have to clean up - school, cops, community drama, ect. This job never, ever stops! Thank you!

You also have to live scan if you are a potential caregiver. They will look into your personal background, if you have a criminal record, or child abuse issues.

My information is regarding LA County @sunshinemaras. No need to be nasty. We are all fighting battles here, and trying to help each other in this journey towards caregiving mentally ill children.

I’m digging through it too! Let us know if you find anything beneficial! I did call a number on the number and was told about the usual, call NAMI. I was given a couple of numbers to help with discounts on utilities and a one time free utility bill per year. Anything helps!

Oh man
You have to be extra assertive in LA county if you plan to get extra care…
Or to even be taken serious there…
That’s the county I am talking about
Is it being nasty to demand that you want extra care for your loved one that they should be providing you?

My son lives with his dad who is also on disability. My son gets SSDI and Medicare for paranoid schizophrenia. He’s never lived independently and is not worldly and really not able to make important decisions. I don’t understand why they don’t also receive food assistance. They definitely need it.

Go to the office as the laws have changed and people with ssi can recieve food stamps …
At least 80$ more a month for food…
This is at least in California

@daquilamarguerite1 - I noticed you said your son and his dad were getting disability -ssdi. If they receive disability over a certain $ amount (varies somewhat by state) they aren’t eligible for ssi income. If their income is low enough to get ssi, that can come with varying degrees of Medicaid and the possibility of SNAP (food) benefits.

Does anyone know to get home care in Louisiana? I asked NAMI and they did not have an answer. My adult son lives with me. I wash his clothes, cook, clean, give rides everywhere for him and always reminds him of taking meds, etc. etc. It would be great to get assistance. He still barely washes his hair, brush his teeth, etc. I just got food stamps and Medicaid for him and now working on getting SSI for second time. I am depressed and stressed out! Any advice?

Hi, I don’t know if anyone responded to you, but I googled IHSS in Louisiana and came up with this Home & Community-Based Services | La Dept. of Health. These services are intended to keep the disabled in the home and are offered in every state in the US.

Its illegal in some states to become your family’s member care giver!
Example Georgia

That’s so unfortunate - family is often times the best person for the job :frowning:

I know,that’s what I thought too!

When my son was younger, I was also quite suspicious of Asperger’s. Also questioned Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Bipolar. Yet, he was diagnosed ADHD & doctors said he was too young for a diagnosis.
Your post gave me a piece of mind that maybe I really was on the right path and did all I could to help my son.
Thank you!
