I want my son back

Hi Sandy

This may be too late for you to ever see it but…

First, sorry for what you have gone through. It sounds like hell. Mental health care in this country - well, somebody on here said its better than the US, but it really isnt great. And it’s sounds like you have experienced some really irresponsible care. I’m glad you are complaining. I hope you get someone to listen to you.

I really wanted to say something about support groups. I am from the UK and I go to an Alanon group and find it very helpful. It is strictly for family and friends of alcoholics and addicts, its a sister organisation to AA.

I started going because cannabis used to be a problem with my son. But I have stayed. And although I don’t really talk about what is going on with my son that much, I find it takes away the sadness in a way that few other things do - being in a quiet, peaceful place with other people going through difficult times and where the focus is on me and how I can help myself bear things. The supportive philosophy is a key element (the twelve steps, even though I dont really follow them) - the approach to life has really helped me cope.

There are alanon groups all over the country.

I did go a few times to a family support group at the Early Intervention Service where my son has been seen but I actually found it too distressing to hear other people’s stories. And our sons and daughters were so different that it wasnt much practical help either.

I am another who has found Alanon groups very supportive and helpful. I am not attending meetings at the present but would suggest it to anyone who needs some group support.

I do know that feeling. I went through it all and it is a nightmare that will not end here but in Canada not so.Orthomolecular.org. (Not com but org) has been giving info and working with the California schizophrenia foundation healing schizophrenics for over twenty five years. This org is out of Canada. Every year they have a symposium, this year April in Japan. Not here in the USA where the pharmaceutical companies make billions on the medicines but Canada. I want to do that here in the USA. The millions of homeless Schozohrenic s need their own communities to begin with and who better to build them then the rich greedy pharmaceutical companies. If a homeless individual would prefer to sleep on a park bench at least have that park bench be in a safe community of theirs. Anyone want to help me get the homeless safe communities and heal schizophrenia instead of putting it in remission for a season with poisonous medicines???

My son, Ryan was just diagnosed with schizophrenia and we want our son back too! We are going for therapy and he has been in the hospital twice since October 19th. He is on medication and going for counseling, but he won’t let us help him or get any information from the doctors. He is over 18 years of age and because of the HIPAA Laws it makes it hard to get information. We had a Power of Attorney drawn up for him to sign, but he won’t sign it. Do you have any suggestions?? We miss our son and just want to get him help!

You’re in the right place. No easy answers. But we all rage with the same desire to have back the life we saw as possible. It’s a process. Welcome to the 1%s. Read. And love. Love wins.
