How much time did it get better in?
Oh, I’d say between 3-7 months.
First, are these your only symptoms? If so, I’d get a second opinion on your diagnosis.
Second, either way you may have undiagnosed ADHD. It’s possible to have both, and for the ADHD to go undiagnosed for years. I had always assumed that was just the way I was. I had one doctor mention ADHD in passing, but I never pursued treatment. Eventually I was diagnosed in retirement, but stopped short of stimulant medication. Nonstimulant medications didn’t work for me, so now I just deal.
You’ve gotten some great advice here. We’ve all lived the reality of mental illness here, whether it’s because of a loved one suffering from schizophrenia, or whether it’s one of us, or both.
You’re wise to be concerned for yourself when a close relative suffers from schizophrenia. There is a genetic component to it. They say it’s not contagious, but my brother drove me crazy a few times! It is stressful to deal with a loved one suffering with schizophrenia. The suffering part is contagious if you care about the person, and it is very stressful.
Your self awareness and concern are very encouraging. Because of your mother, your risk is higher than the general population no matter what your age. I discussed this with my doctor and he said at my age I’m in the clear. Then he asked me a few questions (about sleep etc) and said I was fine. I remember the doctor asking Billy the same questions and saying he was fine, but he wasn’t fine.
Don’t go too far with self diagnosis. Talk to a professional. If you really want help don’t let them brush you off. Tell them what they need to know. When a doctor is evaluating you he’s working off a checklist.
A doctor will not diagnose you with a mental illness based on one psychotic episode. You have to display certain symptoms for a length of time (typically three months) for a diagnosis. But that doesn’t mean your suffering shouldn’t be addressed. You can get to the root cause and address it.
Best of luck.
