At breaking point and started.divorce proceeding with Schizophrenic husband. Not sure I can go through with it

I would say stress doesn’t necessarily cause MH issues but it can tip you on the scale toward making some apparent or others worse. Like most things nowadays their finding it’s usually a multifactorial problem that may not even include familial stress for some people. It just so happens they have specific differences in the wiring of the brain that makes them more prone to MH issues than others. Add to that seemingly self-sabotaging efforts by most governments to ignore the MI (this is changing albeit slowly), most problems never get resolved. Outsiders hope the problem goes away by ignoring it all when it never truly will.

I would agree that -as we were taught in NAMI’s Family to Family - stress can cause psychosis for our family members and nearly everything causes stress for them, even positive changes cause stress.

Still, I believe my son’s schizophrenia was genetically inherited from his grandmother. She had schizophrenia as did one of her sisters and a different sister’s son. A bad breakup in college didn’t cause his schizophrenia, it was always going to happen.

We are almost one year on from when I applies for a divorce and his section in hospital.

Many of you will think I’m mad but… I didn’t go through with it. So basically he is stable and my life is so much better. He now has real support from mental health teams and takes more medicine. He has even found a job! I can’t believe he found employment, it seemed like an jnobtainable dream.

There are still.difficult days and I worry about him keeping a job, but it’s a start.

Thank you to everyone who replied in one of the worst times of my life.

@Chai_Tiney_Latte Hello!! It’s been a few months, sorry I’m joining the conversation late. Like you life has been hell and emotions back and forth on keeping the family unit. I’m nearing the end of the divorce and it’s tough because now I’m being told I have to give him quite a bit of equity in a house he is not on the deed, mortgage or pays for :triumph:

Thanks for sharing your story it brings comfort I’m not alone in choosing my health and safety overall before it’s too late.
