I’ve always explained it to others as a biological medical disorder of the brain. Completely agree it should be reclassified…as should Schizoaffective and Bipolar disorders.

I guess I don’t understand the problem of classification of schizophrenia. I get lost in the medical world of drugs and symptoms. It is hard for me to navigate and understand. I remember the class at NAMI discussing that there were no “physical markers” to detect or diagnose sz or even to tell if a drug could work or not, that it was a guessing game different from “real” (physical) illnesses that can be tested for in the lab. I only know that help for those who are affected is so hard to navigate. It upsets me that the problem is sooooo obvious to us as caregivers witnessing the daily struggles and finding so little help in society.

@oldladyblue yes and if it was a brain disease, I could’ve gotten more support from my family, from society, from the system where my afflicted sister lives …
